The Eye Care Project at Tshemba Foundation is a beacon of hope for those suffering from poor vision in the rural northeast of South Africa. Our dedicated team of skilled medical volunteers conducts cataract camps and vision screenings at Tintswalo Hospital’s eye clinic and surrounding schools, addressing the urgent need for eye care in the region. We’re requesting your support for our Cataract Programme.
Cataract Camps:
- Our Journey: Beginning in 2019, we have gone from offering one or two camps yearly, to 15 camps in 2023.
- What Happens: During our cataract camps, a multidisciplinary team of volunteers performs sight-restoring cataract surgeries and other minor ophthalmological procedures.
- Frequency: We conduct approximately 15 cataract camps annually, each lasting three days.
- Impact: Each camp typically treats around 30 patients, significantly improving their vision and quality of life. This impact goes beyond the individual, and helps improve the lives of the extended family!
- Cost: Each cataract procedure costs approximately R3500 ($200), covering medical supplies, accommodation, and staff salaries.
